last week: are too many people going to college?

According to some research i was reading about in my reading class...we read a lot answers to this question. Are too many people going to college? I personally do not even know how many people go to college but i would assume it is a lot. I think if everyone in college is there for a reason and know what they want to do, then there is no problem with how many people are going to college. Some students go to college not knowing what they want to do at all. I think this is a waste of money because in a lot of cases, some students end up changing their minds about what they to do and end up wasting their money and time on classes they do not even need. I think if students do not know exactly what they want to do when they get out of high school, it would not be a bad idea to wait to go to college until you decide what you want to do with your time and money there. Also in this research, people said that college is not meant for all students. I agree with this. Some students do not need college if what they want to do does not invole college. For example like the army or if they want to do soemthing with television or a family buisness. Some students do not even have enough money to go college. I do not think this is a reason to stop anybody from going to college. I personally think college is way too expensive and the government could help out a little more with helping pay for college. But if it is a hard time paying, then starting off in a commuinty college is not a bad idea at all. Starting it off even if you are quite not sure with what you want to do then a community college would still be the best idea even if you do not want to wait to go to college. i just think people need to be smart about what they want and do not waste their money or time.

technolgy dependent

Technology these days is very much dependent. Everyone relies on on technolgy in the generation y. Phones for example, no one can leave their home without a phone. I know I can't. People need their phones in case someone calls them or texts them just to tell them something that is not even that important. Even when we are driving. When someone hears their phone go off and can not help but to look to see what they say. They can not wait for the car to stop for one second to look at what they said which is why there are so many car accidents these days due to texting. Also computers are very dependent. I know people who have to check their facebook just to see if someone commented on their status or to see if someone commented on their picture they just put up. I have so many friends who have to check their facebook when ever they get around a computer. They do not only check it but they stay on ir for a good hour or so just to look at other people and creep. We just have to do it because the computer is there and is given us a chance to do it. If computers where taken away from generation y, then most people would not be able to handle doing anything. Our gerenation y uses computer for communication, homework, games, profiles, to find information, etc. Without the computers our generatino y would actually have to not be so lazy and get up and actually do something because they can not depend on the technology. Yes technology has made a lot of things much easier for us, but it has made us lazy and depend on it to be succesful. If you look at classes these days, every teacher pretty much usesd the internet to give out homework or anything you need to turn in. It had made life a lot easier.

Week ?...The Studio

The other I went to the studio to revise my paper about the time when we wrote about something. I thought that they helped me a lot. They took everything that Stephanie commented on and helped in any way that they could. When Stephanie said that i needed to add dialogue, they did not just say oh i agree with that. They actually helped me write some dialogue and gave me some great idea that i actually wanted to use to revise my paper. Everyone there was super nice and they did not judge me on how i wrote stuff. They just helped me. Also not just the one person i had the meeting with helped me. Everyone around helped me if i needed something. We were trying to think of a word and me and the girl that was helping could not think of the word so we asked around and everyone helped out right away and went out of their way to help us out which i thought was really nice. Every question i had they answered the best way that they could. I wish i would have went there earlier to have them help out with my paper before. I think that the people there really know what they are talking about and really want to help you out so they will do anything they can to help you. I deffinetly recommened that you guys try out the studio if you need anything because i guaranteed your paper will be a better paper.

tipping servers

i work in a restaurant Chilis, i am a host there. it is probably one of the easiest jobs, but one of the most stressful jobs. It's stressful because customers always complain about where you seat them and servers always complain about what customers you give them because they want a good tip. A lot of people do not realize that the money servers make come from tips, not their hourly wage. Their tips cancel out the money they would make hourly. For example, if a server makde $5 an hour and worked 5 hours, that would $25. If they made $25 for their tips that day, that cancels out the hourly wage, so there for their check would $0. So all their money they make comes from tips not hourly. What i do not get is how people have the money to go out to eat and not have the money to tip people. I see it happen everyday. If you $70 on a meal but only have enough money to leave a $4 tip, then dont get $70 worth of food. That tip is hurting the server and they are not making any money. A lot of people think that servers make hourly wage plus tips so it is ok to tip low, but it is not true. It really frustrates me that people go out and spend all that money and do have enough money to tip. I use to do that when i was younger, but since i have worked in a restaurant i have learned how it works and tipping is a very important thing when it comes to going to eat. So next time you go out to eat, think bout that.

week 7?...writing in progress

I think so far that my writing has gotten better since I have been in this class. We focus on a lot in this class and how to make us better writers which is why I think I am getting better. Before this class I was having trouble working on focus. I like to talk a lot when I write papers and babble on and get side tracked which is not what you are suppose to do in papers. I realized that being focused on just what you are talking about helps the reader understand the reading better and the point that you are trying to get a crossed. When I wrote the rough draft at first, I confused the reader because I had about 3 different ideas that I was trying to point out to the reader and they did not understand what I was trying to say. After conferencing I realized what I needed to do and I fixed it and now understand how to focus on a topic in the future. Also I thought the conferencing helped me a lot. I thought talking through with Stephanie helped me understand exactly what she was looking for. I really like the process in the way we write papers. I like how we classmates helped each other out and got insights on what other people thought. When you write your own papers and fix it yourself, you are probably not going to fix much because you are the one who wrote and you think it is good. Having different opinions is very helpful.

week 6: texting and driving

Texting and driving is probably one of the things that is killing a lot of people these days. Teenagers and even adults do not get the fact the texting while driving is very dangerous. I am not going to lie I do it all the time. But I am going to try my hardest to stop because I know it is not good to do. My dad just told me the other day that they faceted that texting and driving is worse than drinking and driving. When I heard that, I made me really scared and want to be really cautious of texting in the car. It is very tempting to do. You will just be driving and then you hear your phone ring and you just wonder who is it and what they are saying. You are wondering if it is really important, so you just take a quick glance at it. That one decision could ruin the rest of your life and you might not realize that. My friend during the month of March this year was on my way to my house and she called me saying that she just got into a wreck because she was texting. Her car was totaled. I am just thankful that she did not get hurt. Sometimes you might catch yourself not driving good, and then you really need to realize that you probably should not be texting. So all I am saying is be careful while texting and driving because one second of looking at your phone could ruin your life.

week 5: Notes i wrote in middle school

So the other day I was cleaning my room (which took about 4 hours I should say) and I found a box of all my notes that I had lying under my bed from my middle school days. Of course I had to read them and just laugh about the stuff I use to write to my friends. The language I used when writing to them was so funny. I would try and shorten everything I write. Instead of writing the word Like, I would write it as Lyk. Why? I have no idea. I guess it was the cool thing to write back in the day. Half of the notes I read were not even about anything important. They would just say “hey whats up?” or in some letters I read my friends would say “hey whats poppin?” I do not even get why we would talk like that. Then the rest of the notes would say yea so I am in class right now bored out of my mind so I am writing to you to see whats up, and yea you should def write me back so I have something to read. Then you would see like picture at the bottom of your name in bubble letters or something. Then I kept cleaning my room and I found out this print out of a conversation I had online with my ex-boyfriend in 7th grade. I was talking about how we broke up and why and the stuff we said to each other was so middle school language, it just made me laugh so much. The stuff I said to him is not what I would say to people now. Some of the stuff it said was like, “I can’t be friends with you now since we broke up, it is just too hard.” Even thought we only dated for like a month, it was just too hard for me back then I guess. And other stuff said well he said and she said drama like that. I just really enjoyed reading my old letters to my friends and my e boyfriends.

Construction in Peoria

Construction in Peoria is really bad. Every time I go out on the road I find myself having to enter into one lane because they are working on the other side of the road. When everyone is on one side of the road, the traffic tends to go a lot slower. Sometimes you do not even move and when you are by yourself, which most of the time I am, it tends to get really boring. What really bothers me the most is when they work on a street and they finish it, well you think they do, and then they go back like 3 days later and block the whole road again. When I am going to school, I leave at a certain time that I know I will get to class on time, but I always seem to run into construction somewhere that I have never seen before and it makes me late to school. This is just not once in awhile. It is every day. I am not saying construction is a bad thing, because we do need some stuff done, but I think they can find a way for traffic to not be so bad, or at least let people know where they are working so people who take their usual route can find another route to go. I always think War Memorial is done, so I always go that way but they are always working on it again. I do not get why they do not finish what they need to finish when they are there the first time. It gets really frustrating.

week 4:case study me as a writer

Sometimes writing for other classes makes me realize that writing is everywhere you go. Taking a writing class only betters you. So far I have used writing in every class so far. Over the weekend I had to a take home test in art. We had to write about the different eras of art. I ended up writings six pages of it. Having to write a lot of researches papers in my past really made this paper easy because I knew exactly how much I needed to say and how to go on to the next thing. I also had to write 3 reports for math over the weekend. I never really thought that I would have to write anything for math but I guess it does exist. I work at Chilis. I am a host there. I even had to write stuff for there. One time I had to write about my position and what they expected from me. Also a lot of times whatever you are involved in, they always want feedback and always ask you “how did this make you feel?” or “what can we do to make things better?” “What did you like about it?” I find myself answering these questions all the times at places or events I have been to. For college, you always have to write and tell them things about you and why they should allow you to come to that school. If you did not know how to write, that would show in what you wrote and that would make them think that you did not do that well in school, because writing is everywhere in school, work, home, ect.

week 3: Gay people

I want to share my beliefs on gay people. I truly believe that it is ok for one to be gay. I know that is what was not intended to happen in this world, but if you look around you can see that a lot was not intended to happen in this world and yet people do not look down on those things. You might not be gay or your friend might not be gay but that does not mean you cannot be opened minded on that subject. I believe that if it is not you or you are not that one that is gay, you don’t have to have an opinion on it. Some people cannot help the fact that they are gay. It is just how they feel and it is hard for them to try to change. I know if someone made me try to like girls, I could not do it. I have a gay friend named Evan. He is one of my best friends and I will never look down on him because he is gay. I actually am very proud of the fact that he came out and showed what he believed and did not care about what other people think, because he knows that what people think will never stop what he feels. I know some people do not agree with gays and cannot help it, but I do not think that they should try and try and change the way a gay feels because the gay is not trying to change the way that person feels about them being gay.

week 2:case study writing: the writing in me

I have always enjoyed writing. I am not the best at it, but I know I get better at it every time I write. One thing I am not the best at in my writing is the vocabulary. My writing would sound a lot better if I used higher vocabulary. I think the reason I am not the best at vocabulary is I do not read that much. Well that is always what my mom said anyway. Every time I read a book, I do not feel like my vocabulary gets any better, but I am sure it gets better if I give it time. For school, I really enjoy writing research papers. I know most people are probably like why? For some reason I enjoy it because it comes really natural to me and I think it pretty easy, just really time consuming. I always learn new things and it feels so good when you type that last word knowing you are done. Persuasive essays are also probably my favorite to write. I have written so many throughout my years in school that it comes natural for me in the same way. Writing is one way you can express your thoughts and actually get out what you want to say in your own words or way of saying it. That is why I enjoy writing so much. I am not saying writing is the easiest thing around. It can be very challenging and sometimes I enjoy the challenge. The challenge is what makes it good and makes you get that feeling when you have finally finished what you started.

letter of introduction

Dear Stephanie Scott,
As I grew up, I have lived in seven different houses since I have been born. My first house that I lived in burnt down which is ironic because before I was born the house my family use to live in also burnt down. When we are on vacation during the second house that burnt, one of our neighbors was playing around on our porch with a match and ended up igniting the house. After that, we moved to a house that I grew up in and lived there for seven years. When my parents got divorced we moved into a town house and only lived there for a year. Then we moved into a different neighborhood into a duplex with my brother. This was my favorite house. I have felt the most at home when I lived there. When my brother moved out, my mother could not afford to live there anymore so we had to move to a temporary house. We ended up living there for only six months during my freshman year in high school. My mother finally found an apartment right next to Richwoods, where I went to high school. My junior year in high school, my whole complex had to move due to personal problems with the people who owned the apartment complex. So then we moved into the apartment that I live in now. I have lived here for two years now.
Throughout my middle school and high school careers, I have always been involved in extracurricular activities. I have played softball my whole life. I have played from the grade 3rd grade to end of high school. I have also played volleyball from middle school to high school. Volleyball is my favorite sport and also the one I am best at. I also played basketball from fifth grade through my freshman year of high school until I hurt my back. The one sport that I was also best at was cheerleading. My mother was a cheerleading coach her whole life, so I got really into it. I did school cheerleading and I also did competition cheerleading where you perform around the area. Cheerleading was how I hurt my back my freshman year from tumbling and didn’t continue it from then on. Sports were not the only extracurricular activities I did. During my 4th grade year I joined orchestra and played the cello. I stayed part of the group and was first cello throughout my high school years. I really enjoyed playing music. Not only did I enjoy playing it, but I enjoyed dancing to it. I was on my high school dance teams for a couple of years. I also danced in plays. I have done drama since I was in about 3rd grade. My mother was also a choreographer and always enjoyed having me around in the plays with her. I just recently did a show Bye Bye Birdie over the summer for Peoria Players.
“Friends” is by far my favorite television show. I own every season and watch it every time I decide to watch something. I have seen every episode about ten times each. I also own the “Friends” scene it and play it all the time. Besides “Friends”, the other shows I enjoy watching are “Saved by the Bell”, “Kyle XY”, “The O.C.”, and “What I like about you”. I have also seen all the episodes of these series as well. My favorite actresses are Jennifer Aniston and Rachel McAdams. I enjoy every movie they have ever done because I think they are great actresses. Watching television shows and movies are not the only thing I like to do when I have nothing going on. I also love to eat. Taco bell is my favorite place to eat. I think I could eat it every day of my life if I had to. Cereal is also something I could live off of as long as I have all types of cereal. Apple juice and milk are my favorite drink since I decided not to drink soda anymore. I have not drunk soda for over a year and a half now because I gave it up for a New Year’s resolution and decided to keep going. When hanging out of with friends I also love to play Mario Kart. It is my favorite video game around. Another game I love to play is balderdash. It is a great game to play when you have a big amount of people like at a family event.
This semester I have two goals that I would like to accomplish before the semester ends. One goal is to make many friends. When I imagined college, I imagined making a lot of friends. All my good friends all left for college and went away. Since I do not have them around I would like to make as many friends as possible so I am not stuck missing them all the time. Another goal I have this semester is to keep on all my homework and get it done right away. When I was in high school, I was always a procrastinator and did my homework at the last minute. I always got my homework done but it was never always my best and not having it done would freak me out. I think If I just get my homework done right away, I will not have a lot of stress on me this semester. I hope to accomplish these goals as long as I work hard on them.
Sincerely,
Catie Breaux
