tipping servers

i work in a restaurant Chilis, i am a host there. it is probably one of the easiest jobs, but one of the most stressful jobs. It's stressful because customers always complain about where you seat them and servers always complain about what customers you give them because they want a good tip. A lot of people do not realize that the money servers make come from tips, not their hourly wage. Their tips cancel out the money they would make hourly. For example, if a server makde $5 an hour and worked 5 hours, that would $25. If they made $25 for their tips that day, that cancels out the hourly wage, so there for their check would $0. So all their money they make comes from tips not hourly. What i do not get is how people have the money to go out to eat and not have the money to tip people. I see it happen everyday. If you $70 on a meal but only have enough money to leave a $4 tip, then dont get $70 worth of food. That tip is hurting the server and they are not making any money. A lot of people think that servers make hourly wage plus tips so it is ok to tip low, but it is not true. It really frustrates me that people go out and spend all that money and do have enough money to tip. I use to do that when i was younger, but since i have worked in a restaurant i have learned how it works and tipping is a very important thing when it comes to going to eat. So next time you go out to eat, think bout that.

  1. Catie, Is this policy true at all other restaurants? Is this new? When I was a server we got a ridiculously low hourly wage but got to keep it regardless of tips.

It FREAKS ME OUT when people don't tip and tip well. These people have obviously never waited tables.
